This variety of Altocumulus describes the wavy form of Ac, in which layers, patches, or sheets of the cloud exhibit an undulating structure. This wave-like pattern may affect only a few cloud elements or the entire visible layer, patch or sheet (see definition: Undulatus). Ac undulatus frequently appears as an Ac stratiformis. Particularly well-known examples are the undulating layers found in this variety of Altocumulus—often colloquially referred to as 'fleecy clouds' or 'sheep clouds'. However, wave-like forms can also occur in Ac lenticularis, Ac floccus and Ac castellanus.

A typical layered Ac undulatus looks like this:

Typischer Ac undulatus (Ac stratiformis perlucidus translucidus undulatus) / Typical Ac undulatus

The undulating structure often encompasses large areas of the cloud layer, particularly in the case of Ac stratiformis. This frequently creates a regular wave pattern that stands out clearly in the sky.

Quite often, two or even more wave systems appear simultaneously within the Ac, resulting in a checkerboard-like pattern—as seen in the following image of an Ac stratiformis:

Altocumulus undulatus mit zwei Wellenmustern / Altocumulus undulatus with two wave patterns
Altocumulus undulatus mit zwei Wellenmustern / Altocumulus undulatus with two wave patterns

Ac stratiformis undulatus can occur in varying thicknesses. Very thin forms look extremely delicate and are often confused with Cirrocumulus:

Distinguishing between Altocumulus and Cirrocumulus is initially difficult in the case of very fine undulatus forms. Overall, however, Altocumulus undulatus is more common than Cirrocumulus undulatus; furthermore, in some instances, iridescence (near the sun) indicates that the cloud is Altocumulus. This optical phenomenon occurs in supercooled cloud droplets and is therefore rarely observed in high-altitude Cirrocumulus, which typically consists of ice crystals.

The typical layered Altocumulus undulatus generally appears in the variety 'Translucidus'. On the one hand, these are often very thin and flat layers of Altocumulus within which the waves develop...

...on the other hand, the wave-like forms are particularly striking when the layers of Ac are somewhat thicker and have already developed their own shading, as is the case here. Yet this Ac still belongs to the variety 'Translucidus" (see Altocumulus translucidus):

Altocumulus stratiformis translucidus undulatus - auffallende Formen / striking forms

However, the layered variety ‘Opacus’ also occasionally develops striking and regular wave patterns:

Altocumulus stratiformis opacus undulatus
Altocumulus stratiformis opacus undulatus

In particular in the case of the layered Altocumulus opacus, wave formations can sometimes develop to a massive scale; these 'Billow Clouds' cover large portions of the sky and are highly conspicuous. In this example, the large billows are forming within a layer of Altocumulus opacus (below Altostratus). A perforated structure is also visible on the dark underside of the Altocumulus—towards the center and upper part of the image—meaning this cloud can additionally be classified as an Altocumulus lacunosus.

In some cases, continuous waveforms occur during the transition between Ac stratiformis translucidus and Ac stratiformis opacus:

Übergang von Ac translucidus undulatus in Ac opacus undulatus / Transition from Ac translucidus undulatus into Ac opacus undulatus
Übergang von Ac translucidus undulatus in Ac opacus undulatus / Transition from Ac translucidus undulatus into Ac opacus undulatus

Wave forms in Ac stratiformis often appear in combination with other varieties of Ac; this occurs most frequently with the variety 'Perlucidus', where the blue sky or other clouds are visible in the spaces between the wave forms (see Altocumulus perlucidus):

Ac stratiformis perlucidus undulatus
Ac stratiformis perlucidus undulatus

Altocumulus stratiformis radiatus undulatus (Ac str ra un):

This is often the case with the radiating variety of Altocumulus as well, such that Radiatus and Undulatus occur together (see Altocumulus radiatus):

Altocumulus stratiformis radiatus undulatus
Altocumulus stratiformis radiatus undulatus

Wave forms in Altocumulus stratiformis can sometimes be stacked in two or more layers, thus Altocumulus undulatus can simultaneously appear in the variety 'Duplicatus' (more frequently in independent wave systems, less frequently in interconnected ones) (see Altocumulus duplicatus):

Altocumulus stratiformis duplicatus undulatus
Altocumulus stratiformis duplicatus undulatus

Wave forms in combination with the variety 'Lacunosus' occur occasionally in Ac str, too. An example of this can be seen in the next image (see Altocumulus lacunosus):

Altocumulus stratiformis lacunosus undulatus
Altocumulus stratiformis lacunosus undulatus

Altocumulus stratiformis undulatus mamma (Ac str un mam):

Supplementary features such as Virga and Mamma occur quite possible in the variety Undulatus with Altocumulus stratiformis (Ac str) (see Altocumulus mamma).

Undulatus-forms also occur with other species of Altocumulus.

For instance, in Altocumulus lenticularis:

Altocumulus undulatus in Übergang zu Altocumulus asperitas /

Altocumulus undulatus in transition to Altocumulus asperitas

In rare cases, Ac undulatus can transform into Altocumulus asperitas. This evidently occurs when wave-like or billow-like forms appear on the undersurfaces of dense, continuous layers of Ac opacus and Ac castellanus (or Ac floccus). These undulating forms can further evolve into Ac asperitas, although the precise mechanism of this transition still remains unknown (see the discussion under Altocumulus asperitas).

The appearance of the various forms of Ac undulatus is often associated with an expected change in local weather conditions.
